Author and advocate for women's issues, Higginson was born in Kansas to Charles and Mary Rhodes in 1861. The family moved to Oregon in Higginson's youth, where she married Russell Higginson in 1885. In 1888, the couple moved to Bellingham, Washington, where Higginson's writing career flourished. She was nationally published in journals such as McClure's, Harper's Monthly, and Colliers.
